Outrageously Fun Onomatopoeia Activity

I have to confess, this is not my original idea, but it is modified from the original. If it’s your original idea, I’d love to give you credit. In previous years I have done this lesson with pretty good results. First, students draw the letters for their onomatopoeia word on white paper, colour them and cut them out. Next, students cut a shape from the newsprint. Last, students glue the newsprint to construction paper, and then the letters on top. In previous years, my students were to focus on the letters of the onomatopoeia word and have them represent word’s meaning in some way. Like this:

This year, I asked the the kids use the newsprint to make a shape that also represents the onomatopoeia word. In addition, the newspaper shape also needed details. If you look closely at SLURP you’ll notice eyes, sprinkles cut from plain white paper, bends in the straw and a cherry on top. This was what I was after. I wish I had taken more pictures but, I am terrible at remembering to do that! I think the kids enjoyed this art project. After it was complete, we used it as the cover page for our Poetry Booklets.
