How to Make Learning About the Physical Regions of Canada NOT BORING ….and a FREEBIE

Physical Regions of Canada Activities

There are lots of worksheets floating around on TPT that cover the physical regions of Canada, but not a lot of hands on or creative resources. I have got some suggestions to get away (at least somewhat) from the do the worksheet and answer the question type of presentation.

1. Make the Worksheet More Interesting by Changing How Students Respond

So instead of read a passage and answer questions, students could read a passage, look at photographs of the region and draw a picture incorporating your objectives. Have students label the pictures using vocabulary from the passage. Or, have students collect images from the internet of the region and create a digital collage in powerpoint. How about a flip book? Kids love them.

2. Go Digital

There’s no sense denying that kids are more engaged when technology is used.

  • Create a digital collage using pictures from the region or using pictures that demonstrate some of the important facts found from reading the worksheet.
  • Use Teachers Pay Teachers new digital layer tool to add a digital layer to the pdf resources you may already have. I have written about the new tool here.
  • try out a digital flip book.

3. Games to Reinforce the Content

Games like Bump, word searches, colour by code and self checking task card(FREE) have kids reviewing and learning without realizing it. Check some out here in my TPT store.

4. Read Carson Crosses Canada, by Linda Bailey

I can’t wait to use it this year as part of my unit on the physical regions of Canada. If you are a Canadian teacher, you need this book, whether you teach the regions or not. My plan is to read this at the end of our unit. I’ll give pairs or groups of students a map of Canada with the regions marked, their flip books and an atlas. We’ll read the book over a few days. As we read I am going to have students refer back to the flip book we made and the atlas. We will figure out where Carson and Annie stop and plot this on our map. At the end of the book we will talk about where they didn’t stop as well and why perhaps, they didn’t go to those regions. This way we cover all the regions.
